"Beware of Dog"
As managers, training in anger management may be required before filling a position. Most of these programs approach anger as a sensitive problem to avoid rather than how to actually "manage" the anger. Most programs talk about better ways to express anger, which is almost always in privacy and not toward the source of the anger. So why are companies so cautious of anger use in its employees?
Cost
The average cost of defending a company from victimization suit is $700,000. A reported 1.7 million victimization suits occur annually. Companies shell out the cash to pay for these suits, and as a result, the employees responsible are more than likely terminated from the company. Instead of paying the bills for a lawsuit, companies would rather pay for anger management workshops for their employees. Company usually save the more extensive and expensive training is reserved for managers.
Precations
Most companies, due to the risks involved with deviant anger, frequently preempt any complications with employee anger. At the first sign of possible anger issues, most management will require an employee to attend special training programs to "control" anger. However, in most cases, the anger is not severe enough to be considered deviant anger. The employee or manager may have practiced an effective communication style involving anger, but are quickly told to avoid it for fear of lawsuits.
"Beware of BULLDOG"
Remember, these fears of anger stem from the consequences of deviant anger, not all anger. It is important to remember that we can go too far in expressing our anger, which leads to the legal ramifications. But to beware of all anger is impossible and inefficient. Instead, we must beware of deviant anger and suppressed anger.
