Five-Year Average Enrollments (18^th century)

The following universities are ranked by their average enrollment for the 18th century, based on data provided by Eulenburg [1904, 164-65]. These same data are also displayed in a graph.

These enrollment figures are, in part, estimates made by Eulenburg following a formula he devised, although by the 18th century recording such enrollment figures became more commonplace, resulting in more reliable numbers. The older records generally indicated only the number of students matriculating (entering the college), but not the exmatriculants (those leaving the college, with or without a degree), nor the total number of students currently attending classes during any given semester. See Eulenburg [1904, 29-42, 143] for a discussion of his method of calculating enrollments from the matriculation records, and of the nature of the records. Compare also the numbers offered in Paulsen [1921, 2: 129], which draws on Schrader [1894], Michaelis [1768-76], Meiners [1801-2], and Conrad [1884].
