RUNNING RECORDS
Running records are a relatively quick assessment to employ, thus the name “running” records. This name implies that teachers can assess reading on the run. Created by Marie Clay, running records call for teachers to simply record the words read correctly and record the words misread. The teacher then tallies the errors, divides that number by the total number of words in the selection, and determines the percentage of words read correctly. This percentage translates to the readability of a selection. If the piece is at the instructional level then the teacher knows approximately at what level s/he is reading.
