READING FLUENCY
Measuring a reader’s fluency indicates how many words a reader can read in a short amount of time. Theoretically, the more the reader can recall sight words on demand, the more fluent s/he will be. Teachers can create their own reading fluency tests by selecting a grade-level or reading-level appropriate text and having the student read out loud for one minute. The number of words read correctly in one minutes provides the teacher with an important picture of the student’s reading fluency. Teachers may also use the DIBELS, a reading fluency assessment designed by Stan Deno and his colleagues, which already has different levels of reading selections. The teacher records the number of words mispronounced, and omitted among other ideas.
