PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS
Assessing a student’s phonological awareness provides the teacher with some important information.
· When a child recognizes a word in a sentence, it shows s/he can segment the sentence.
· When a child recognizes a rhyme, it shows s/he can identify words that have the same ending sounds.
· When a child recognizes syllables, it shows s/he can separate and blend words the way they are pronounced
· When a child recognizes onset-rime, it shows s/he can combine the onset (beginning of the word) with the rime (end of the word)
