Jan 3 (Thu) — Jan 4 (Fri)

• January Session begins. Discuss the course readings while on campus (Thu-Fri): 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 2:00-3:00 p.m. in SCIC 131.

Westminster Bridge was first built in 1750, prior to which London Bridge was the only bridge across the Thames near London. The current bridge dates from 1862, and is now the oldest bridge in London.

Jan 6 (Sun)

21:05 CST: Fly from Chicago (ORD) to London (LHR) with United Airlines (UA 938), arriving at 11:05 GMT (Monday, the next morning).

Jan 7 (Mon)

• Arrive in London (LHR) at 11:05 GMT. We will take the Tube into the city to drop off our bags at our hostel.

• Early afternoon: Tour of Westminster Abbey followed by a walking tour from the Westminster Bridge, up Whitehall to Trafalgar Square, and then along the Strand to St. Paul’s Cathedral (a good way to work out the kinks from the overnight flight.

• Early evening: Dinner near St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Jan 8 (Tue)

• Morning: A quick visit to Leicester Square followed by a long morning studying art in the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square.

• Lunch at Covent Garden.

• Afternoon: guided tour of "Classic Westminster".

• Early Evening: Viewing "The Treasures" at the British Library.

Jan 9 (Wed)

• Morning: Walking tour from Marble Arch down to Buckingham Palace.

• Noon/Afternoon: Boat down the Thames to Greenwich to visit the National Maritime Museum, the Queen’s House, and the National Observatory.

• Evening: Free time for theater or a concert.

Jan 10 (Thu)

• Morning: Tour the Tower of London.

• Afternoon: Explore the Medieval wing of the Museum of London.

• Late afternoon: Choral evensong at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

• Evening: Free time (Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos is on at St. Martin-in-the-Fields and there are late hours at the National Portrait Gallery and the Wellcome Collection of medical oddities).

Jan 11 (Fri)

• Morning: Walk along the South Bank to see the Globe Theater, Winchester Palace and the Southwark Cathedral. Lunch at the Borough Market.

• Afternoon: Tour St. Paul’s Cathedral and a climb to the top of the dome for the best view of the city.

• Late afternoon and Evening: Visiting the British Museum.

Jan 12 (Sat)

• Morning: Study medieval and early modern exibits at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

• Early afternoon: Study 18th century science and the history of medicine at the Science Museum.

• Late afternoon and evening: Free time (Late hours at Tate Modern, Vivaldi's Four Seasons is on at St. Martin-in-the-Fields).

Jan 13 (Sun)

• Morning: guided tour of "The Square Mile" — the heart of central London that has been a city since Roman times.

• Afternoon/Evening: Pair-up to re-visit sites or explore the new on your last day in London.

Jan 14 (Mon)

• Morning: Travel from London to Paris on the Eurostar train (departing St Pancras Station/London at 10:24 GMT, arriving at Gare du Nord/Paris at 13:47 CET).

• Afternoon: Tour d’Eiffel (elevators to the top), boat trip down the Seine, Arc de Triomphe (and a climb to the top), a walk along the Champs Elyssee, and in the Jardin des Tuileries.

• Dinner as a group in the Latin Quarter.

• Evening: Free time.

Jan 15 (Tue)

• Morning adventures on the Île de la Cité: Cathédrale du Notre Dame (crypt, church, and up the towers), Sainte Chapelle, Conciergerie, Tour St. Jacques, Pont Neuf.

• Afternoon: Free time (suggestion for art lovers: the Musée d’Orsay).

• Evening: Free time.

Jan 16 (Wed)

• Morning: Musée de Cluny (Moyen Age), and a brief visit to the Arènes de Lutèce (a Roman amphitheatre).

• Afternoon: St. Séverin, La Sorbonne, St Germain des Prés, and possibly a stroll through a famous cemetery: Cimetière du Père Lachaise.

• Late Afternoon: A guided tour through the Medieval Latin Quarter.

• Evening: Centre Pompidou.

Jan 17 (Thu)

• All day at and around the Louvre.

• Lunch at the Place de la Concorde or Jardin des Tuilleries.

• Evening: Free time.

Jan 18 (Fri)

• Day trip to Chartres to see the cathedral and medieval town; Centre International du Vitrail de Chartres.

Jan 19 (Sat)

• Morning: A guided tour of Medieval Paris and the Templars.

• Afternoon: Free time (Catacombs; Sewers of Paris; ...).

• Evening: Free time.

Jan 20 (Sun)

• All-Day: Pair-up to re-visit sites or explore the new on your last day in Paris.

Jan 21 (Mon)

• Depart Paris (CDG) at 11:40 CET (United Airlines 986), arrive in Chicago (ORD) at 14:10 CST. You will need to arrange for a ride home from Chicago O’Hare.

Jan 22-23 (Tue-Wed): This is officially the last two days of the January Session, but we will not meet again on campus as a class. This will be a good time for you to re-work and consolidate your writing assignments for the course.
