When in Paris ... Speak a little French

Memorize at least these five phrases:

bonjour (bohn-zhoor; good day)

pardon (par-dohn; pardon me)

s’il vous plaît (see voo play; please)

merci (mehr-see; thank you)

au revoir (oh vwahr; good-bye).

When entering an office, a reception area, or a small store you must greet the people there:

“Bonjour, madame” or

“Bonjour, monsieur”,

“Bonjour, Messieurs-dames” (for a mixed group),

... and when leaving the office or shop, say

“Merci, au revoir”

Failure to do this will appear rude.

If you ask someone for help, and hope for an answer in English, you should quickly follow up your “Bonjour, monsieur” with

“Parlez-vous anglais?” (par-lay-voo ahn-glay)

If you’re lucky, they will.
