Step One
1. As a class, brainstorm characteristics of a good concept map. Create a concept map of concept maps on the board.
2. Discuss as a class how a teacher can assess a concept map. Create a checklist or rubric for assessing the concept map.
3. For the next class period, read the article “Graphic Organizers with UDL” http://www.cast.org/publications/ncac/ncac_goudl.html. Pay close attention to the section “Instructional Context.”
4. For the next class period, read the children’s story A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.
5. Using paper and pencil/pen, create a concept map for the character of Camilla . Make sure you bring it to the next class period.
