Synopsis of Story: Ashraf is a little boy who lives in Africa. He lives in a city, so he has never seen a real zebra or lion. He walks on pavement, past shops, and crosses streets with blinking lights and lots of traffic. Ashraf loves living in Africa, in a big city where lions and zebras only exist in library books, and Ashraf’s imagination.
Standard 2: Reading: Comprehension
1.2.3 Respond to who, what , when, where ,why, and how questions and discuss the main idea of what is read
Activity: After reading the book to the children ask them what comes to mind when they think of Africa. Then ask them questions about the book. Who was the little boy in the book? What type of animals did he like to learn about? Where in Africa did he live? After asking these questions have the students go back to their desks and pass out a map of Africa to them. Then give a mini-lesson on Africa, by stating some facts about the continent. Point out the countries you speak of on the class World Map. Then have the children color the map of Africa you gave to them.

1.1.11 Read common sight words (words that are often seen and heard)
Activity: After reading the book, and while the students are still sitting in a circle close to you, have them point out sight words in the book as out as you turn the pages. Ask for student volunteers to come up in front of the class, and point to the sight words on the page. Then write all the sight in the book on the board and go over them as a class.
