Manchester College prepares teachers of ability and conviction. This motto, taken directly from the college's Statement of Mission, reflects the broad purpose of both the college and the teacher education program. New teachers who have achieved the program goals and objectives listed above will indeed be people of ability and conviction.
The liberal arts-based teacher education program at Manchester College is a student-centered program. Relationships between faculty and students demonstrate mutual concern and respect. Students receive personalized, sensitive mentoring from the faculty.
The model for the teacher education program has been designed to reflect our program. Our program objectives have been grouped into four broad goals: Curriculum, Assessment, Relationships, and Environment. The first letters of these goals form the acronym “CARE,” which reflects our program motto, “Preparing Teachers of Ability and Conviction.” We certainly graduate teachers who are skillful in designing and delivering an appropriate curriculum, who assess students competently to drive future instruction, who form professional relationships that will support students, and who provide a stimulating and age-appropriate instructional environment so all children can learn. However, we also graduate teachers who care about their students and their profession, teachers who will go beyond the basic requirements of their work demonstrating compassion to make a positive difference in their students’ lives. We agree with the College motto: Faith, Learning, and Service. The rising sun on which the acronym CARE is printed represents the better education and society we will achieve, given teachers who hold these ideals.
