Each student will complete two prereading activities,
during reading activities,
postreading activities, one rubric, and one assessment.
Prereading Activity One:
Print out the activity, complete it, and turn it in. This is to be done before
reading begins.
Prereading Activity Two:
Play
Where, Oh Where Does that Little Object Go?
This is an online matching game for all students. They are
given a diagram of the orbits of the planets. (Remember, an orbit is one of our
key vocabulary words). Underneath the diagram, the students are given a box with
the names of the nine planets and spaces under those nine planets. Students will
choose the number that matches the planet and fill in the blanks. Once finished,
the students can click the "Check me!" button and check their answers. (The
"Erase my answers" button will erase all answers and let the students start
again).
During Reading Activity One:
Print out the activity and fill in (before reading) the K and W of the KWL
chart. While reading, fill in the L part of the chart. If more space is needed,
use the back of the page. The KWL chart should be turned in once completed.
During Reading Activity Two:
Play
Solar System Trading Cards.
This is an interactive online game where students will click
on one of the ten given pictures. These do not have to be completed in any
specific order. Once the students click on the picture of their choice, they
will answer the question (under the picture) by choosing one of the three
answers. If the students answer correctly, they get to add that 'playing card'
to their collection. They are also prompted to learn more by reading a few facts
at the bottom of the page. Then, they may choose to click the "Pick Another
Card" button or the "Finish" button. If the students answer incorrectly, they
are given a small amount of information about each of the three choices. They
will read the information and then choose the correct answer.
Postreading Activity One:
After finishing the book, print out the activity, complete it, and turn it in.
Postreading Activity Two:
Play
Solar System Shuffle.
This is an online game where students will match the card
number with the correct space. Students will fill in all blanks with the correct
answers and click the "Check my answers" button. (To start over, click the
"Erase my answers" button).
Assessment:
Print out assessment, complete it (by self), and turn it in. This is to be done
before the rubric.
Rubric:
Print out rubric, complete it, and turn it in. This is to be done after the
assessment.
Here is a list of interactive online games that students can play to reinforce their learning or learn more:
Play Surfing the Solar System: A Treasure Hunt Game and Puzzle.
This is an interactive online game for more advanced students who finish their work early and want to learn more about the solar system. It may require some research and is a bit of a challenge. There is a grand riddle for the students to solve after they solve all eleven questions.
Play Planet Tac Toe.
This is an interactive online game where students will play tic-tac-toe. They do not need a partner to play with them. Students will click in a square in the box (wherever they want to make their first move) and will have to answer a question. If they answer the question correctly, the spot will mark an X as theirs. If they answer the question incorrectly, the spot will mark a O. To play again, click the "New Game" button.
