Problem Solving Tips

A "Recipe" for Solving Problems

  1. Carefully read the problem. Look for hidden clues or keywords. make sure you understand what is being asked.
  2. Read the problem AGAIN - at least four more times!!!
  3. List all the quantities you know and indicate the quantity you want to find.  Use complete mathematical statements (such as v = 22.5 m/s).  Include units on all numbers.  Remember that the units will help you identify what the number represents (i.e., "m/s" go with "speed," "kg" goes with "mass").
  4. Choose the equation from the possible ones which contains only what you know and what you want to find; it should not contain other quantities you do not know.
  5. Solve the equation for the quantity you want to find (do the algebra).  Do this BEFORE you plug in any numbers - this will make your life easier!
  6. Substitute numbers and units; convert units if needed.  Don't forget to plug in the units, too!
  7. Check that answer is reasonable.  Is the order of magnitude reasonable?  Does the answer have the correct units?

Converting from one system of units to another is often no trivial matter.  Here is a table of useful conversion factors that might come in handy for such a task.  (You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this file.)
