Second Grade Student Teaching
My second grade class in my room.
Cooperating Teacher: Sherri Washburn
Class Size: 21 students (4 with IEPs)
School District: Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation
I taught full time for five and a half weeks and the following is an example of what I taught:
A poetry unit in reader’s and writer’s workshop. I had the students write three
poems, an acrostic, a tic-tac-toe and a diamante poem. They then read them in
front of their parents one evening at the “Poetry Café” that I hosted. We served
hot chocolate and cookies. In an effort for everyone to be able to understand
the students, I typed all three poems each child wrote to be displayed on the
smart board behind the student as they read their poems. Click the coffee cup
for pictures!
A unit on nonfiction in reader’s and writer’s workshop was introduced where the students wrote expert books on the topic of their choice. The students read a lot of nonfiction books, looked at their schema, and asked questions.
A math workshop was introduced at the end of my placement. The students made 'Wanted' posters for the number 24. Most math instruction was through Saxon Math. I was able to put the guided practice up on the smart board and have the class help me complete it so they knew what to do for homework.
Literacy centers were introduced. There were three students at a center. There
were seven centers in which the student rotated through. At the listening
center, the students listened to their science textbook on tape because we were
talking about nonfiction. At the computer center, the students typed poems and
took Reading Counts quizzes. At the writing center the students wrote in their
Writer's notebooks. At the two reading centers the students read and completed a
reading log. At the smart-board center, the students played spelling word games.
At the word work center, students worked with their spelling words using file
folder games. Click the books for pictures.
A small unit in science was completed where the students grew clovers in cups
just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. We did another science project where the
students had to create something useful out of recycled material. Click the
recycling sign for pictures.
The
students were able to play in a basketball game against the other students in
the second grade. Click the basketball for pictures.
