Rules and Procedure You will be placed into detective units (teams) of three or four agents. Each unit will be represented by a color. As detectives, it is your job to recover three Cocoon Clue tokens of your unit’s color. Sound easy? There’s more. To retrieve your three Cocoon Clue tokens, you must complete a series of three tasks, each challenging your mind as well as providing you with skills for future detective assignments. But you are not in this alone. Before you set out on your journey, a unique and colorful client has delivered to your office the following envelope. The contents of the envelope are confidential and must only be seen by your team of investigators. Beware of possible spies and double agents. They could be lurking around every corner. Be safe, have fun, and good luck!
Good afternoon, detectives! My name is Catey Pillar, a longtime resident of Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana. I have heard of your notorious reputation as leading investigators in the North Manchester community, and I admire your hard work to keep our environment safe. That is why I trust you, and ONLY YOU, with this mission. Here is my dilemma: two nights ago, while packing my luggage for a week-long vacation at my sister’s house, Betty Fly, I noticed my new purple shoes were missing. Now, I know how my friend Mon Arch loves to borrow my things, but he usually returns them when he is finished. Unfortunately, Mon has gone missing! I can’t find him anywhere. I have it on good authority that he was last seen in the Atrium of the Science Center on the Manchester College campus. That would be a great place to start looking! Thank you for taking this case, and good luck!
Destination: Observation “Test tubes, microscopes…” Go to the Atrium located in the Science Center. At this stop, use your “mental microscopes” to make three observations of the items located at this stop. You may record these observations on the Observation Checklist below. *Keep in mind the observation skills we discussed in class. Ask yourself, “What would a good detective do?” or “How would a good detective record the information”.
Hello again, detectives! I just heard from my neighbor Viceroy that he just saw Mon Arch flying across campus ten minutes ago. While Viceroy was having a short chat with Mon about the weather, he noticed Mon had an interesting pair of shoes on…my new purple shoes! At least I know Mon has them, but unfortunately, I have fallen down my tree-trunk stairs and hurt one of my many feet. Now I can’t go looking for Mon myself. Could you please find him for me? Before I left Viceroy’s house, he told me that Mon had some shopping to do at the Compari-shop near Petersime Chapel. I hear you can do lots of comparing of many different things there! Please help me out on this one. It would be greatly appreciated!
Destination: Comparison “Something slimy, something gross…” Using your map, locate and visit Petersime Chapel. At Destination: Comparison, your task is to carefully compare the physical differences between the multiple life-stages of the caterpillar/butterfly. Notice similarities and differences. Use the chart below to record your comparisons. Be specific on your findings. *REMINDER: Looks can be deceiving. One stage may look similar to another stage. Don’t be fooled!
Oh, did you miss him? That’s too bad. Well, I know of one last place he could be. If I know Mon Arch as well as I think I do, he must have gotten tired of shopping at the Compari-shop. If he did, then he must have gotten lots of merchandise! That means he must be heading home to the Morpho-Birdwing Organization Center in Painted Lady Park. It’s easy to get there. Just follow the map provided to you in your packet. I think the college students know it better as The Peace Gardens. Be careful crossing Wind Tunnel Alley (the road)! It can be a whirl of a time getting through that! Also, beware of strangers. I hear there are several spies and double agents about, conducting some mimicry and pretending to be Mon Arch…oh dear!
Destination: Organization (Ordering) “Chemistry, Biology…” Your last stop on this clue-finding journey of exploration is here, The Peace Gardens. At this destination, locate a bag corresponding to your unit’s color. Attached to the bag is a note which contains the directions to your last task. Teamwork is a key element to the final task. Work together and have fun!
Thank you so very much! If you are reading this message that means you have found Mon Arch and retrieved my new purple shoes! How wonderful! Now I will be able to go on vacation to my sister’s house. Thank you so very much. I would like to thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. Please meet me at the final destination to retrieve your reward as well as my gratitude. Again, thank you!
Destination: Homeland “This is where I want to be!” As a team, locate and race to the finish line. Teams completing the race with all three Cocoon Clues will receive Science Trail Prizes! Your clue to the location of the finish line can be found below. Where is the place in which you learn cool and fun things about science and our world, as well as other subjects? (*Hint: Its where you go every Monday through Friday.)
