National Chemistry Week-November 6th-11th

National Chemistry Week - Science Seminar

The Manchester College Chapter of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates participated in National Chemistry Week. The theme of this year’s National Chemistry Week was Kitchen Chemistry. On Monday, November 6, 2000, the ACS presented four hands-on experiments in Science Seminar. Science majors, non-science majors, and faculty enjoyed the experiments. The four stations were: dancing raisins, slime, cornstarch goo, and alka-seltzer rockets. Each of the experiments included chemicals and reagents that can be found in most home kitchens. One purpose using chemicals from home was to encourage people to think about the chemistry they encounter in everyday life. Chemistry is not only seen in laboratory settings. Chemistry surrounds us in our daily lives. National Chemistry Week aims to educate the public on the significance of chemistry in our daily lives.

Upcoming Field Trip

The Manchester College ACS is sponsoring a field trip to Eli Lilly, a pharmaceutical company in Indianapolis on November 30. Approximately 13 people have signed up to attend. The van will be leaving at 7:00am and returning in the late afternoon. This field trip should be a great time! We are going to be touring the company and eating lunch in downtown Indy. Although this trip is full, another field trip is planned for spring semester and every ACS member is strongly encouraged to spend your $5 dues and come along!

"Kitchen Chemistry"

If you took note as you attended classes in the science building these past two weeks you may have noticed the boxes heaping with canned goods. One activity sponsored by the ACS to celebrate National Chemistry Week was a Food Drive. This year, the theme of National Chemistry Week is "Kitchen Chemistry" and our officers thought that a food drive would be a great way to promote this theme. To encourage donations, professors, such as Dr. Bryant and Dr. Klein, made deals with their students by matching or even doubling whatever canned goods they brought in. The food drive lasted for two weeks and all food will be donated to Manchester Food Pantry. For all of you who donated – Thanks!!!!!!!

Semester Service Project

For the last several years, as our Chemistry Week service project, ACS has gone over to the local elementary schools to perform demonstrations to help, in the words of Dr. Klein, "educate the Hoosier youths." However, the executive board felt it was time to put on our thinking caps and come up with a new unprecedented idea. We have decided to help local girl scouts earn their merit badges in the fields of biology and chemistry. While plans are not finalized, look and listen for complete details after Thanksgiving break. Also, the executive boards thank tanks have temporarily ran out of ingenuity gas, so if any members have any ideas for a spring term service project feel free to express your opinions and ideas. However, there will not be any recounts or re-recounts. Have a safe break and Happy Turkey Day!
