Prospectus In this course we survey the literature, history, and religion of ancient Israel using selected portions of the historical and prophetic books as primary sources. Particular emphasis will be placed upon introducing students to the tools and results of modern Old Testament scholarship. The ultimate aim is to facilitate intelligent and fruitful continued study and contemplation of the Old Testament as literature, for inspiration and for enjoyment. Internet Syllabus Supplement This course makes considerable use of the Internet. Outlines of class lectures, sample tests, review questions, and additional background information will be found on the Internet. You can access the page for this course through Blackboard Remember that you will need to check this site on a regular basis for changes, additions, and late announcements. General Information This is a reading course. Be prepared to do large amounts of reading. Of special importance are the readings in the Old Testament. I will expect you to bring your text, the Access Bible, and your supplement, A Guide through the The Old Testament, to class daily. I will also expect that you will have read the assigned Old Testament reading for the day and completed any workbook exercises in order to participate in class discussion. Lectures in this class will supplement material in The Access Bible and A Guide Through the Old Testament. The background information already presented in these texts will be assumed in all our class discussions. So it is important to come to class fully prepared to enter into discussions. Getting help.
