          Plus supplementary reading from the library, hand-outs, or Internet.

Course Objectives

Catalog Description:
The encounter of Christianity with the classical, Islamic, and barbarian worlds from the first to the 14th centuries, dealing with sectarianism, heresy, creedal orthodoxy, and Catholicism.
General Course Content:
The course will be guided by, but not limited to, a close reading of The Story of Christianity. This reading will be supplemented by exploration of primary texts, biographical studies, class discussions, and lectures.
General course goals:
1. To gain an awareness of the roots of present day Christianity
2. To gain an appreciation for the variety and the boundaries of the expression of Christianity through the ages.
3. To be able to identify 50 individuals and their contributions.
4. To explore the effect of the Constantinian age.
5. To identify the major recurring themes of Christian thought
Objectives for Students:
1. To develop a sense of the chronology of the Church
2. To explore many of the stories from early Christianity
3. To investigate the social and political forces upon early Christianity

Course Requirements

Attendance: Your participation in class discussions and careful attention to material presented in lectures will be essential to success in this class. Therefore:
1) unexcused absence from class will reduce your semester grade.
2) Late arrivals to class will reduce your semester grade.
3) Coming to class unprepared for the assigned discussion will reduce your grade.
4) If you need to miss a class, check with the instructor first to make arrangements.
Class Participation:
Class participation is encouraged and will be considered in the final grade.
Major papers
1) Biography on a person of your choice within a time frame to be assigned.
2) Issue paper, describing the development of one element of Christian thought.
Tests
One mid-semester examination and one final examination.
