Manchester College Department of Education

Goals and Objectives

based on the INTASC Principles

Each Manchester College Teacher Candidate…

constructs and delivers appropriate curriculum for P-12 students.

Curriculum-

C1- Plans informative, developmentally appropriate lessons and/or units INTASC 2, 3, 4, 7  NBPTS 1,2

In Educational Psychology, I created a lesson plan on thesis structure for my students.  This lesson can be taught at different grades to help them with their thesis statement.

My lesson plan on allegories, written for my field experience in Educational Psychology, shows that I can apply the skills I have in English to my teaching strategies.  I can use what I know about allegorical stories and reflect that in my lessons for my students.

C2- Teaches subject matter accurately to insure that students can meet P-12 academic standards  INTASC 1, 3, 4, 7 NBPTS 1,2

In my unit plan on Of Mice and Men, my students will be in charge of holding a trial for George.  During this lesson, I wanted them to meet the standards lesson in a fun and interesting way.

During my middle school student teaching experience, I created a lesson on mood to ensure that my students could understand the concept and master that standard for their grade level.

C3- Uses interdisciplinary instruction as appropriate INTASC 1, 7 NBPTS 1,2

During Education 348, we wrote interdisciplinary unit plans as one of our projects.  My group's theme for the unit plan was teamwork, and I developed a lesson plan for writing papers that included History and English components.

When my seventh graders were learning about Science Fiction, I created a lesson that incorporated the historical context of the short story we were reading to help learn about what was going on during the time and to bring in some historical aspects.

C4- Addresses subject matter from various points of view INTASC 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 NBPTS 1,2

In my unit plan for Of Mice and Men, one of my lessons has my students discuss one of the character's actions in different views, using a fishbowl activity.  The fishbowl activity helps students see different points of view of the same argument through discussion.

During my Science Fiction Unit in my middle school placement, my students had to fill out a chart that asked them to look at the short story from the perspective of one of the characters in the text. They had to compare his attitudes from the beginning of the story to his attitudes at the end, showing them the different points of view that can be shown in even one character.

C5- Teaches students to use critical thinking and problem solving strategies INTASC 4, 5, 7 NBPTS1,2

One of my lessons for my Of Mice and Men unit has my students looking at character's actions and how they effect the plot.  In order for my students to accomplish this task, they will have to use critical thinking in order to dig deeper in the text and look at the underlying problems in the plot, which will help them get a deeper understanding of the novel.

During my Of Mice and Men unit, my students had to think critically about the character Crooks.  They had to prove Crooks had different attributes and think about why he was separated from the other men.

C6- Uses effective questioning strategies INTASC 4, 5, 7 NBPTS 1,2

In my Shakespeare class, we wrote discussion questions that will help students dig deeper into texts and readings.  These questions are a sample of other questions I can create for many different levels of learning and discussion.

In my seventh grade student teaching experience, I noticed my students were having a hard time backing up their answers with evidence from the text.  In order to help them with this process, I created these questions which forced them to look into the text and write down what evidence they used, which really helped them with the process.

assesses students’ learning and development with a variety of measures to aid in appropriate and effective instructional planning

Assessment-

A1- Develops appropriate tools to assess learning INTASC 4, 8 NBPTS 3

For my unit plan on Of Mice and Men, I created a unit test to assess my students' understanding and knowledge of the novel and topics discussed during class time.  This assessment will help me see what my students have taken from this unit.

During my high school placement, I developed a grammar quiz that not only asked them to identify the rules and definitions, but to apply the rules as well.  That way, I can see that they can not only identify the problems, but fix them as well.

A2- Assesses learning through standardized and/or teacher constructed tests to drive future instruction INTASC 8 NBPTS 3

In Education 230, Educational Psychology, we had to create a lesson plan based on a student's standardized test score. Taking this information, I created a lesson plan on editing checklists to help students proofread papers.

In my middle school placement, my students would take Acuity tests in order to see their progress in English.  We used this information to assess where the students were in the class and help them progress to a higher level of understanding.

A3- Assesses learning through appropriate alternative measures to drive future instruction INTASC 4, 8 NBPTS 3

In my class Adolescent Exceptional Learners, I created a unit plan on Of Mice and Men.  To mix up the lessons, I had my students write journals about the Great Depression and had them follow this rubric to make sure they were following the guidelines correctly. This alternative method helped mix up the unit a bit and also helped them with their writing skills, which will help prepare them for the ECA.

In my senior classes in my high school placement, I created a project for them to complete on a Romantic poet instead of giving them a test.  I wanted to break up their test taking and assess their learning in a different manner.

A4- Uses a variety of appropriate, authentic assessment tools and methods INTASC 4, 8 NBPTS 3

During my Classroom Management class, we were required to create an assessment for our presentations.  My group's assessment was a quiz over the material we were presenting, which would help us see what our fellow classmates learned during our presentation.

For my middle school placement, I created a Science Fiction Unit test over the information we discussed in class.  My students were tested over the two stories read in class and the background information discussed in class.

establishes professional and reciprocal relationships with others invested in P-12 students’ learning

Relationships-

R1- Demonstrates sensitivity for diversity with students, colleagues, parents, college faculty, and/or community agencies  INTASC 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 NBPTS 5

By attending the 2009 Pre-Professional Workshop, I learned to become more aware of different individual's situations.  During this workshop, teacher candidates learn how to be sensitive to all different cultures in many different situations and how to incorporate this sensitivity in your life and your classroom.

During my Classroom Management class the fall semester of my senior year, we developed a classroom management plan for my future classroom.  In this plan, I created a parent letter welcoming their student into my classroom and letting them know how the year was going to go.  That way, the parents felt that they could contact me with any questions or problems they may have.

R2- Demonstrates with full awareness of ethical and legal responsibilities of teachers INTASC 7, 8, 9 NBPTS 4

My Credo shows my beliefs as a teacher and what teaching really means to me, and shows my passion for teaching and why I believe teaching is the right career path for me.

During my high school student teaching experience, I had a situation with one of my students that I needed to turn in to the necessary people.  In this reflection, I discuss the ways I used my responsibility as a teacher to handle the situation.

R3- Values life-long learning, personal/professional development, and/or service orientation INTASC 9 NBPTS 4, 5

My REPA Reflection Paper demonstrates that I care about professional development by keeping up with what is going on with licensure.

My Field Experience Reflection for Educational Psychology reflects that I take every opportunity to enhance my teaching skills.

R4- Models appropriate oral communication skills INTASC 6 NBPTS 1, 2

In Education 263, we were required to form a presentation on something related to mild disabilities.  My presentation was on the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and showed my oral skills and my confidence in front of a class.

In Education 348, my partner and I made a presentation on school violence and safety.  We had to share facts and statistics as well as how educators should deal with violence in school.  This presentation showed my confidence and professionalism in the classroom.

R5- Models appropriate written communication skills INTASC 6 NBPTS 1, 2

My essay on Horatio Alger's novel Ragged Dick displays my writing style and skill that I have developed over my time spent at Manchester College.

In senior Seminar, I had to write a paper that soon turned in to my final paper.  This paper focused on the novel The Virgin Suicides and focused on the Gothic elements that were infused in the suburban setting.

R6- Motivates students to learn individually, collaboratively, and cooperatively INTASC 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 NBPTS 1,2, 3

For my placement in January 2012, I created a lesson plan comparing different historical events to the Holocaust.  During the lesson, students had to work independently and in a group to complete the assignment.  Working together and independently are very important skills that students must learn.

In my high school student teaching placement, I taught the novel Of Mice and Men.  During one of my lessons dealing with the characters, the students had to work together to complete the activity.  I wanted them to be able to work in a group to help stimulate conversation and discussion about the novel, which proved to be successful.

R7- Plans lessons in collaborative teams INTASC 6, 10 NBPTS 5

For Education 348, we were put into interdisciplinary groups in order to come up with a unit plan.  In my group, we worked together to make our lessons and helped each other whenever we needed.  I wrote a reflective paper to discuss the group process and how we helped each other.

For Education 348, we created an interdisciplinary unit.  My group did our unit on teamwork, and I incorporated that theme for a unit on writing papers.  This lesson was the first lesson of that unit, which was created in a collaborative team with my fellow classmates.

creates positive and caring environments for student development and learning

Environment-

E1- Differentiates learning opportunities that respond to individual learning styles and learning challenges INTASC 2, 3, 4, 5 NBPTS 1, 2, 3

In Education 263, we were required to write learning objectives that would help us understand what we wanted our students to accomplish during a lesson and how it would tie with the standard.  These objectives would be specific to students learning needs.

For my seventh grade class, I had them research about Ernest Hemingway and tell me interesting facts about his life.  For my inclusion class, I gave them a guided outline to help them organize their thoughts and come up with the answers, which worked very well for that group of students.  That way, they did not have to stress by sifting through the material and could organize the information.

E2- Uses a variety of teaching methods and materials INTASC 2, 3, 4 NBPTS 1, 2, 3

For my seventh grade student teaching classroom, I had my students practice varied word choice with a practice guide.  During this activity, they were to highlight the bland and boring words in the paragraphs and then rewrite the paragraphs using colorful language.  This sheet was extremely effective and my students were actively engaged during the activity.

In my seventh grade placement, I used a Post-it note activity in one of my lessons for the biography of Eleanor Roosevelt.  For their activity, they used Post-it notes to try to find key details in the text.  It was a great success and helped my students learn to be concise in their findings.

E3- Uses a variety of appropriate media and technology INTASC 2, 3, 4 NBPTS 1, 2, 3

In Educ263, we had to review an organization's website, explaining if the website was a successful one.  This assignment shows one of the many ways teachers can use technology to help them expand their knowledge in the education field.

Also in Educ263, we created brochures that explained different kinds of mild disabilities.  By making this brochure, I had to use different technology that I was not used to, but will help me in my teaching career.

E4- Keeps records to monitor, document, and report student progress INTASC 8, 10 NBPTS 1, 3

In Education 352, we created an Impact on Student Learning lesson where we monitored our students progress.  I showed how my student's progressed with learning vocabulary for the novel Frankenstein.  I used this information to help focus on words that many struggled with and see where they needed to improve.

For my middle school teaching placement, I started off with a Science Fiction unit.  In order to see what my students already knew about Science Fiction, I created a pretest/posttest unit on the subject matter.  My students made huge strides in this unit and learned a lot by the time we finished.  Here is the proposal that outlined what I had planned and what I did with my students.

E5- Manages student behavior in positive, safe ways INTASC 2, 5 NBPTS 1,3

For my Classroom Management class, we had to create rules and procedures for our future classrooms.  These rules will help me manage my students in a comfortable and safe learning environment.

For Classroom Management, we also had to create a poster of our classroom rules and procedures.  Having the rules hanging up in class would allow students to always be able to visually see the guidelines they need to follow and the expectations that are expected from them.  Having them visually in class can also help me remind them of these rules and expectations if I need to.

E6- Models conflict resolution skills INTASC 2, 5, 8 NBPTS 1, 3

In Classroom Management, I wrote my classroom management philosophy, which outlines the steps I would take to manage conflict in my classroom.  An important aspect in teaching is classroom management, and a classroom management plan will help teachers succeed from the beginning of their careers.

During my time spent at my middle school student teaching placement, I had an incident involving many of my students.  When I found the incident, I made sure to model appropriate resolution skills to my students and handled the situation in a professional manner.

E7- Engages in research and reflection on best practices in teaching strategies INTASC 1, 2, 7, 9 NBPTS 4, 5

My chapter reflection for Education 352 shows how I have researched in different areas to find different teaching strategies.  Teachers should always research and learn different techniques and strategies so they can always be up to date for their classroom.

During Education 410, we wrote a liberal arts reflection paper about our educational experience at Manchester College.   Through my variety of classes in different subject areas, I have background knowledge that I can easily bring into my classroom.
