When working with two students after school that were struggling with Math, this lesson plan was written to make Math fun. During this lesson the students will create their own menu that they will then use to calculate the cost of a meal. Not only does this lesson cover Math, but it also includes a life skill that they will be able to practice anytime that they got out to eat.

It is important for students, especially middle schoolers, know about the world in which they live. During this unit, the students will become experts on their chosen country. During this lesson students will become actors, participate in the Olympics, read authentic literature, and so much more.

Sometimes it is important to have an
active, participatory lesson. During this lesson, "Groovin' with the cows"
the students
will be moving throughout the room dancing and singing, all while
meeting a Music Standard.

During "Fort Wayne week" we did a variety of activities to
help second graders learn about their community.
After talking about Fort
Wayne the students then selected a letter from the alphabet. Based on this
letter,
the students needed to figure out how it related to Fort Wayne.
When finished the pages were compiled
to create an ABC book about Fort Wayne.

The month of February is often dedicated to Black History
Month. During this month people spend time learning about African American
culture and famous African Americans. This unit takes Black History Month
and puts it into a variety of subjects including: Reading, Writing, and History.
This unit helps African American students in particular to learn and celebrate
their culture.

By the time someone is in Middle School, they should be able
to look at a map and identify countries around the world. Now it is time
to take countries out of the history books and into the Reading, Writing, and
Math curriculums. This lesson is easily adapted to any group of countries
around the world.

C4 Addresses subject matter from various points of view.
INTASC 1, 3, 4, 7 NBPTS 1, 2
It is important to remember that not all students learn best during a structured lesson. In stead teachers should be creating opportunities for students to learn in the way that is easiest and most fun for them. During this lesson on the Solar System, students are instructed to select three activities to help them learn about the solar system. These centers were created based on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences as well as the likes and dislikes of my second grade students.
When teaching point of view it is often good to give an
example to students that they might be able to relate to. This lesson teaches students about multiple perspectives, by
using a book about Washington D.C. from a dogs perspective and the daily
encounters of this specific dog.

When helping out in a High School with students preparing for
the ISTEP, the one thing that many of them struggled
with was pulling out
important meanings from text. This lesson starts out with simple
definitions and the students are
instructed to figure out what each word the
definition is describing. Then the same ideas are applied to reading
stories
and the students need to pull out the key points.

When working with second graders they were not sure what they
should be doing when they are reading an unfamiliar story.
This is when I
came up with the 5 W's method. Basically after the students are
finished reading any story they should be able
to answer the questions: who,
what, when, where, and why. This was easy for them to remember and apply
to any story that
they come across and aided in their Comprehension of text.
C6 Uses effective questioning strategies.
