The Magic School Bus:
Lost in the Solar System

Written by: Joanna Cole

Illustrated by: Bruce Degem

Ms. Frizzle's class is learning about the planets and the solar system.  Their plan is to go visit the planetarium, but it was closed for repairs.  All of a sudden the bus grew rockets and shot into the air, and into space.  The class and Ms. Frizzle went on an adventure in space, visiting all of the planets, moons, and the sun before returning back to school.  The students made a chart of the planets and a mobile of the solar system before heading home.  Everyone wanted to share the events of that day, but would anyone believe them?

About the author:

Joanna Cole loved science from an early age and had a school teacher much like Ms. Frizzle's character.  Cole's favorite book growing up was called Bugs, Insects, and Such which she read over and over many times.  She has worked as an elementary school teacher, a librarian, and a children's book editor.  She combined her knowledge of children's literature with her love of science and decided tow rite children's books.  The first book she ever wrote is titled Cockroaches, and wrote it because a book had never been written about them before.  Cole has written over ninety children's books and has won a couple awards for it.  The Magic School Bus series made it possible to combine her two favorite things: science and humor.
