Welcome to this fun and interactive site that will spark your interest about the great state of Indiana!  You will soon find out, after reading H is for Hoosier that Indiana offers more than corn fields and farmland!                           

 

Follow the basketballs through this fun site. By completing these activities in order it will insure that you will learn about Indiana and why it is special in its own way.  After completing each activity, make sure to print them off, so there is evidence that each has been completed.  Make sure to follow directions carefully. Pre-Reading Activities

 

Activity 1

 

In the story H is for Hoosier, Cynthia Furlong Reynolds discusses many characteristics of Indiana.  Before you read the story, brainstorm about Indiana using the template provided. 

 

Directions for Brainstorming:

1.  Print out the Brainstorming web provided.

2.  Place the word Indiana in the middle of your star because it is your focus.

3.  Begin brainstorming by placing what comes to your mind when you think about the state of Indiana (example: Basketball or Corn) and place the words in the blank rectangles provided.

Activity 2

 

Have you ever wanted to be a poet?   This is your chance!  You will be creating your very own acrostic poem about Indiana.  Remember have fun and be creative!  Think outside the box! 

 

Directions for acrostic poem

1.  Go to http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/acrostic/ to create your poem

2.  Follow the instructions given.  (Remember your topic is Indiana)

3.  Print out completed poem.

                                      

 

During Reading Activities

     Activity 3

      Before reading H is for Hoosier, print out the crossword puzzle,         

      so you can fill in the answers, while you read.  This worksheet is to help you

      remember what you have read.

      Activity 4

 

         After reading the letters A-M, take time to think about the words that

       the author used to describe Indiana.  Are there any letters that you

       would change to better describe Indiana?  If you would change any of

       the words, what would they be and why?  If you like the words that      

       the author used to describe Indiana, what words did you like the best

       and why?  You will answer these questions in a brief journal entry. 

       After completing the Journal entry, print it out and then draw a

       picture to go along with what you have written.

Activity 5

 

Click Here for a map of Indiana.  As you look at the map find the Wabash River. Then find the capital of Indiana.  After looking at the map for a few minutes choose a river, lake, or city to research.  After selecting a topic write a five to ten sentence summary explaining the topic.  After everyone has written their summaries, we will share them as a class and locate them on a large map of Indiana.  Listed below are some websites that may be beneficial to you.

Activity 6                                      

What do you think makes Indiana special? Is it the small towns?  The game of basketball?  The corn? What have you learned about the state of Indiana and its history from H is for Hoosier?

 

Pick a topic about Indiana, from the list provided and create a poster explaining information found about your topic. You may use books, websites, and articles to get ideas to find more information about the state of Indiana.  Listed below are seven topics that you may choose to do your poster and a website that may be beneficial to you.  Also listed below are basic guidelines for your poster and a rubric.

Beyond Reading Activities

 

      Activity 7

 

            It is your turn to create your own book of Indiana.  You can use any of

        the sites that are listed, magazines, books, or encyclopedias to help

        you find words that help describe Indiana.  After you decide on a

        word for each letter, you will write one to two sentences explaining

        the word and you will draw a picture.  Once you have completed

        your book it will be laminated and bound and you will share it with

        the class.  Before you start your book you must use the planning sheet

        you have it completed.

 

       Activity 8

 

          You are being put up to the challenge to create a flag for the state

          of Indiana, just like Paul Hadley did in 1917.  Since you have read H

            is for Hoosier and have researched Indiana, it is your turn to create

          a new flag for Indiana.  After you create your flag you need to

          explain why you put the items on it that you did.   You will draw the

          flag on the sheet provided, after you print it out.  Have fun and be
