Brian Pease, President

Welcome to a new academic year at Manchester College. I hope everyone’s summer was terrific and that things are going well so far this year, especially those of you who are beginning your college career here at MC. My name is Brian Pease and I have had the honor of being elected your president for the 2001-2002 academic year. Last year I served as treasurer of our local chapter of ACS.

I came to Manchester College from Fort Wayne, IN, and am the eldest of five children. I am a senior chemistry major, also working on my certificate of teaching, in chemistry and biology in middle and high school. I have been involved with TUNSIS for four years and currently serving as one of the co-chairs.

We have an ambitious agenda this year. We hope to be more active and visible then in recent years. I am looking forward to helping to make them a reality. However, we can only accomplish this with YOUR membership and participation!!!

I am looking forward to a great year for ACS, and am pleased to serve you in my role as president.

Mary Swartzentruber, Vice President

Welcome to the Manchester chapter of the American Chemical Society! As the year progresses, I hope to get to know all of you! My name is Mary Swartzentruber and I am the Vice President of ACS this year. Just so you can learn a little more about me, I am a senior chemistry major and math minor. During the months of November through April, I can be found out on the track practicing with our Manchester track and field team.

I am really excited about this year! I hope we can work together in organizing some fun and unique activities, speakers, and field trips! I would like to see our membership grow and become more active in our community. Chemistry is a subject that so many youth shy away from due to the idea that it is an "impossible" class to take. I want to show students that it can be an extraordinary and exciting subject and that through a little work, anyone can grasp the basic concepts surrounding chemistry.

Dana Veneck, Secretary

I hope everyone has had an exciting first month of school and I know it will only get better!! My name is Dana Veneck and I am a senior biology-chemistry major with a minor in math. I am from Indianapolis and I have three younger sisters. I ran track for the first time last year and had a great time!!

I am very excited about planning many activities for this year in ACS. We have discussed many projects involving children of the community, such as helping some of the local girl scouts earn science badges and going to the elementary school during National Science week. I have done demonstrations at the elementary school and it is a lot of fun!! I encourage everyone to participate!!

If anyone has any suggestions of field trips or speakers for this year, please feel free to contact one of us. We welcome any input or ideas from anyone! Have a great year!

Melissa Walterhouse, Treasurer

Hi! Welcome to a new year at MC. My name is Melissa Walterhouse. I am the treasurer for the 2001-2002 ACS academic year. I am a senior biology-chemistry major with a minor in history. Upon graduation, my goal is to attend medical school or be involved in the medical field through graduate school. My ideal career would be to combine both science and history. I live in Westville, a small town in northern Indiana. I am originally from South Bend. I am the youngest of three girls and have one younger brother. On campus, I enjoy working as the Chemistry Department Secretary and tutoring. I am looking forward to a fun and exciting year for ACS.

Dr. Susan Klein, ACS Advisor

This year should be an interesting and exciting time for the ACS - Student Affiliates. We have just learned that our chapter was recognized with an "honorable mention" award from the National ACS. This is the second year our chapter has been recognized for its accomplishments with this award, which is based on activities and events held through out the year. We will continue to participate in the types of activities that the Manchester ACS has always had, such as field trips, outside speakers, service projects, and social events.

My goals for this organization this year are to continue with the strong tradition that we have, while encouraging greater participation from a wider range of students. We want more people to be involved and we want to have a larger variety of service projects. One goal, which I believe is very important, is conducting service projects with children. Young people have an interest in science, especially chemistry, which needs to be fostered and supported.

Look for a variety of events this semester, with a cornerstone being National Chemistry Week in November. The theme year is "Chemistry and Art." We will build on our past successes and strive to do even greater things in the future.
