2000-2001 ACS Officers…

President: Janel Bailey

Hello ACS members! My name is Janel Bailey and I will be your 2000-2001 ACS president. I grew up in Rensselaer, IN which is a small town in northwest Indiana. This past summer I worked for a corn genetics plant and spent my days walking through cornfields. As you could imagine, I am happy to be back at school. I am a junior biology/chemistry major here at Manchester College. My future plans are always changing but as of now I would like to attend graduate school to study molecular biology and become a biology professor. Some of my activities this year at Manchester include G.I.V.E and waitressing at the Main View. Other activities I have been involved in are intramural sports, radio dj, BACCHUS, stockroom assistant, and lab assistant. I hope we have a successful academic year!

Vice President: Amy Rogers

Hi! My name is Amy Rogers. I am a senior chemistry major from Goshen, Indiana. I graduated from Northridge High School in Middlebury, Indiana in 1997. Along with attaining my chemistry degree, I am also working to be certified to teach chemistry and math in middle and high school. On campus, I enjoy working as a Fundies lab assistant and a tutor. Besides ACS, I am involved in MARC, FESP, SEA, track and field, and new student orientation. I am looking forward to a fun and exciting year with the ACS.

Secretary: Lindsay Hathaway

I am the secretary of ACS for the 2000-2001 academic year. I am a junior biology-chemistry major with the intent of heading to medical school. But if medical school is not my destiny I hope to be involved somehow in the medical field. I am from Painesville, Ohio which is located east of Cleveland. But I really like attending Manchester College and being part of such a small community. Besides being involved in ACS, I am also the President of GIVE, a volunteer organization here on campus. I am a part-time waitress at Main View so you all can come there to eat and leave me some big tips! We have a lot of interesting ideas for ACS this year and I am looking forward to helping to make them a reality!

Treasurer: Brian Pease

My name is Brian Pease and I am the treasurer for this year. I am currently a junior Biology-Chemistry major. I am from Ft. Wayne and the eldest of five children. This summer was a summer of firsts for me. It was the first time that I have flown, and the first time I had an unexpected welcome home party, if you consider flashing lights of the crash and burn rescue unit a welcoming sight. It was my first visit to Florida and to see the ocean. When not putting my life at risk, I worked as a Phlebotomist ("blood sucker") at a local hospital in Ft. Wayne. I am looking forward to a great year for ACS, and am pleased to serve you in my role as treasurer.

Upcoming Activities for Fall 2000

The ACS officers have been starting the planning for a number of activities for the fall semester. The activities are sometimes informative (field trips and speakers), sometimes service oriented and sometimes just fun. In order to succeed the input and the help of the membership is needed for the planning and the execution of these projects. Don't hesitate to let your voice be heard at meetings, or to volunteer when help is needed.

This fall the ACS plans to take a field trip to a lab or a school that interests the membership. Recent field trips have been to Marion Country Forensics Lab, Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals and NASA. At the first meeting a survey will be conducted to determine where we should take our fall field trip.

One large event in fall is National Chemistry Week which is being celebrated by chemists nationwide this year November 5 -11, 2000. The theme this year is "Kitchen Chemistry." In recent years the ACS has conducted demonstrations at Manchester Elementary School in 4th and 6th grade classrooms. The details of the service project for National Chemistry Week will be discussed soon.

Our other regular fall events include the invitation of an outside speaker and a social event (last year was a Christmas Party at Dr. Klein's house).

If you have ideas for any of the events mentioned above or wish to be more involved in the planning of an activity, please contact an officer or the advisor, Dr. Klein.
